Daily Needs
The daily needs of the home are just the same as the daily needs of any family. Whatever your family needs in a day – and I mean needs, not just a craving or a fancy for – is needed by the children at Good News. They need everything that we have but there is no money for luxuries.
- They need someone to look after them and staff need paying.
- They need to eat - food is very basic and filling. Maize, porridge, rice, beans, pulses, cooking oil, green vegetables and meat twice a month. There are occasional treats given by good friends
- They need to go to school and this means paying school fees. Expenses include buying uniforms, books that are very costly in Kenya, pens, pencils, paper, exercise books, the huge cost of transport too and from school, money for lunch and school trips.
- They need all the personal toiletries and hygiene items that we take for granted
- Because so many of the children are so far behind at school, they often need help with extra lessons
- They need home clothes and all their clothes to be kept clean – washing for 30+ children on a wood-burning stove is almost a full time job
- They need some relaxation - swimming trips and playing music, guitars and football
- They need medicine and a visit to the doctor or hospital when they are ill – all of which has to be paid for. There is no equivalent to the NHS
- They need to know that they are loved and cared for, and this also means discipline
- They need to be encouraged in their faith as this sustains them all through their lives
